SGS do Brazil Toys testing laboratory is able to realize approx. 90 different tests, all of them following the Federal Legislation which regulate the manufacture and trade of this kind of product, in the whole of the national territory. These tests are mandatory in order to certify toys manufactured in our country or imported into Brazil. “Several types of security tests are compulsory, all manufacturers and importers must comply”said Angela Pellegrino – The SGS Director of SGS Consumer Testing Services
“For that reason, the consumer must look very carefully for an Inmetro stamp in the package, before buying any toy. This seal will guarantee that the product has been tested according the rules foreseen in the legislation, and that it is safe for the children.”
In order to certify a product, SGS can realize two different set of tests. The first one verifies the toy resistance and its security in its normal utilization. Amongst other items, the possible existence of toxic substance in the package or its contents, presence of any particular sharp particle which could provoke cuttings and also noise tests are generally performed.
Other set of tests are named of “abusive use” of the toy, where more sophisticated equipments are needed since the toy goes through a traction, torsion and compression tests. The Lab has also a special machine simulating the mandible of the children biting the toy in order to tests the toy resistance.
Also the plush toys are submitted to the most rigorous tests, including a flammability test. Its objective is to know on which velocity the fire will propagate. The fastest it does the more danger exists in the product.
“Brazil is not only the biggest Latin America toy manufacturer. Brazil is also one of the most concerned country with the safety and security of children that will use these toys” finally explains Angela.
